#UpTheLics

What a night! On Saturday, July 24th, The Publics performed for the first time in two years, down at the Black Market Venue. The atmosphere was electric and so was the crowd. It was clear to see that the local 5-piece indie rock band has a lot of solid support as people danced the evening away on the dance floor and thoroughly engaged with the band, from start to finish.

You can tell that the band has a bright future ahead of them too, especially if their most recent single ‘Art of War’ is anything to go by… You could easily add this to a playlist with the likes of Wolf Alice, Catfish and the Bottlemen, The Wombats, and the oh-so-popular Arctic Monkeys, and the Lics would fit perfectly within that line-up. The band even went on to do a cover of ‘Mardy Bum’, whilst still staying true to their style and sound. A mixture of original material and favourites from the band made up the set-list and certainly made a good impression on their loyal fanbase in the mosh-pit, and impressed newbies like me.

I took some photographs of Josh, Elliot, James, Euan, and Ebony as pictured below, so you can see for yourselves just how enjoyable it was for them to be performing after all this time. I also managed to catch up with 4/5 of the band after the show, as the lads answered a few post-gig questions.

The 5-piece.
Drummer James is hiding away at the back but making an impact!

Ebony on backing vocals.

MOTM: How was it to perform after two years?

Elliot: Aside from the ending [due to timing, the set-list was cut short] that was absolutely fantastic, we did not expect that many people to be there dancing…

Josh: The energy was amazing. It was a great feeling.

Euan: It was incredible to get out there playing again.

MOTM: Newer members, how is it being part of the band?

Euan: Insane, can we swear on this? It was fucking amazing. One of the best bands I’ve played with. Ebony is lovely as well, ‘Good 4 You’ really made her shine.

James: She was great, even doubling up with you [Josh] was good. She just keeps getting better.

MOTM: What can we expect for the future of The Publics, what’s next?

Euan: What can’t you expect?

James: More gigs!

Josh: That was our sixth one ever, we’ve got two lined up… A headline one in Notts on 17th of September and then we’re supporting The Rats in Notts and they’re quite big from Manchester, so you can find all the tickets on our page and then hopefully more music towards Christmas time and the New Year.

Elliot: Lots of new music. Big things in the works.
